Ralph Joseph Melancon, 85, a native of Thibodaux, La and a resident of Saint Charles Community, died Monday, October 9, 2017.

Visitation will be from 9:00a.m. until funeral time on Saturday, October 14, 2017, at Saint Charles Borromeo Catholic Church. 1985 LA-308, Thibodaux, LA 70301.

A mass of Christian Burial will be at 11:00a.m. Saturday, October 14, 2017, at the church until burial in Saint Charles Borromeo Cemetery.

He is survived by his wife, Marie Louise Autin Melancon, son, Ralph Joseph Melancon, Jr. and his fiancée Dr. Jennie L. Perry, grand-daughter, Maygan Ellen Melancon, and sister, Barbara Ann Melancon. He was proceeded in death by his parents, Wilson J. Melancon and Gabrielle M. Weimer Melancon.

Ralph Melancon was born in Thibodaux, LA. On June 30, 1932. He graduated from Thibodaux College High School in 1950. He graduated from LSU in 1955, and joined the United States Air Force. He graduated from Pilot Training and received his wings in 1956. He graduated from All Weather Fighter Interceptor training in 1957. In 1963, he was a graduate of the Base Civil Engineer course at the University and Institute of Technology. In 1972, he graduated from Loyola University of New Orleans and received his Juris Doctorate Degree in Law. He was a registered Petroleum Engineer in Louisiana, was a member of the Louisiana Bar Association and the Lafourche Bar Association.

He retired as a Brigadier General from the Louisiana Air National Guard and the United States Air Force on July 30, 1992, after a total of 3 years active duty and 34 ½ years in the Air Force Reserve and the Louisiana Air National Guard. He served the last 5 years of his Military Career as First Air Commander and then Assistant Adjutant General, La ANG.

He retired as Regional Supervisor, Production and Development on March 31, 1995, from the Mineral Management Service Department of the Interior with over 36 years of service.

Among his many awards are the Distinguished Service Metal, USAF, the Legion of Merit, USAF, two DSM's from the Military Department- State of Louisiana. He also received all 3 Honors from his work with Minerals Management Service as a Petroleum Engineer, the Meritorious Service and Distinguished Service awards. In 2008, he was inducted into the Hall of Honor by the LSU Cadets of the Ole War Skule.

In retirement he kept busy doing volunteer work and served as a Commissioner for the Lafourche Parish Fire Protection District Number 1. He was a man of unshakeable Faith and was a parishioner of St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church and until recently had served regularly as an Usher, Lector and as a Eucharistic Minister. He was also on the Parish Pastoral Council for many years. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council 2060, was a Fourth Legion Knight and a Knight Commander in the order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem.

He was a loving husband, brother, father, grandfather and friend.
