Mary Frances Barker Schneider, 95, passed away suddenly on October 13, 2018 at Seasons Hospice in Cumming, Ga.
The Funeral Mass will be at 10:00 am Monday, October 29, at Holy Savior Church in Lockport, La.
Burial will be at a later date at St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church cemetery in Independence, Wisconsin.
She was born was born February 24, 1923 in Lockport to Richard Hobbs Barker and Marie Blanchard Barker. She was a member of Holy Savior Church, attended Holy Savior School and Gran Coteau College.
In 1941, Mary Frances enrolled in the Hotel Dieu School of Nursing in New Orleans with the intention of joining the Navy upon completing her degree. However, she met her future husband, Mark Schneider, an LSU medical student from Independence, Wisconsin, at Charity Hospital in New Orleans in 1944.
They were married at Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Church on the Loyola University campus on February 12, 1945.
After Dr. Schneider returned from overseas military duty they moved to Blair, Wisconsin where he opened his medical practice. They made Blair their home for more than 50 years, raising six children.
She and her husband were founding members of two Catholic parishes - St. John’s Catholic Church in Whitehall and St. Ansgar’s Catholic Church in Blair.
Mary Frances was a member of the deanery committee for the LaCrosse, Wis. diocese and taught CCD for many years.
She was active in Blair as a Girl Scout and Cub Scout leader and president of the MNC Women’s Club.
Several years after her husband’s passing in 1997 she relocated to Mooresville, N.C. to be close to her daughter Judy and son-in-law Bill Nielsen. Then In 2008 she moved to Alpharetta, Ga., close to son William and daughter Beth Taylor. At the time of her death she was a resident of Autumn Leaves Memory Care community in Alpharetta.
She is survived by five children; sons, Mark Schneider (Carolyn), Travelers Rest, S.C., Michael Schneider (Lisa), Timnath, CO., William (Jenny) Cumming, GA., daughters, Mary Patricia White (Leslie), Albuquerque, NM, and Elizabeth Taylor, Cumming, Ga., 10 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren and brother, Robert Barker Sr. of Lockport.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, Mark, daughter Judy and son-in-law William Nielsen and son-in-law Richard Taylor. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in her name be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, Memphis, TN.
