Lloyd Adam Danos, 91, a native and resident of Raceland, LA, died peacefully on Sunday, January 30, 2022.
Lloyd was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 62 years, Frances Woodall Danos, and son Rawl S. Danos; parents, Armond and Eugenie Guichet Danos; 7 brothers, Armond “T-Mon”, Waul, Edmond “Smitty”, Enos, Norman “Pat”, Hughes, and Donald Danos; 3 sisters, Eula Danos Foret, Cornelia and Alice Danos. He is survived by his children Weldon (Kayla), Marcus (Janet), Margaret (Daniel “Pooney” Jr.) Rhodes, Dana (Kevin) Menard, Carla (Prentice) Pace. He was a loving grandfather to grandsons Gerard Danos, Marc (Angel) Danos, Derek (Stacey) Dufrene, Brandon Dufrene, Dillon (Joni) Rhodes, Chandler Rhodes, Prentice “Riley” Pace; granddaughters Ashley (Tony) Dunaway, Brittany (David) Rhodus, Frances Pace, Mikala Pace, Zoe Pace, Scarlett Pace, Amanda Williams; great grandchildren Beau Danos, Benjamin Danos, Blayklee Dunaway, Barrett Danos, Cooper Dufrene, Emmett Rhodus, Eliza Rhodus, Carson Allen, Coley Miller, Hayden Williams, Bryer Williams, Jayce Dunaway.
“Coach” Lloyd had numerous athletic achievements. Beginning in 1946 he was captain, quarterback, and MVP of the Raceland High Cubs football team. He was a walk-on at Louisiana State University but failed to make the cut. He was a walk-on at Northwestern State University in Natchitoches, LA, and was offered a football scholarship, which is where he met his wife, Frances. He graduated in 1951 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Education.
Shortly after graduation, he was drafted into the Army at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, Texas. The Fort Sam Houston Rangers football coach offered him to join his team as a football player and line coach. There, he was voted MVP lineman for 2 years, and made All Army team as a guard.
At the end of his second season, the Los Angeles Rams coach offered him a spring tryout. However, after reporting to Brook Army Medical Center base hospital, he was informed that he had a serious eye injury needing surgery that ended his football playing career.
In late August 1953 Coach Lloyd accepted a line coaching position at St. Francis de Sales in Houma under Buddy Marcello. While coaching there, he helped lead the St. Francis (now Vandebilt) football team to win the State Championship. In spring of 1958 he accepted the position of Assistant Coach at Raceland High School, his alma mater, and later became Head Coach.
He coached there until mid 1970’s, then became Assistant Principal at Raceland Junior High. During his tenure as Assistant Principal, Raceland Junior High achieved national recognition as an outstanding junior high school. In 1980 he was appointed principal of Raceland Junior High and retired in 1990.
Coach Lloyd was a devout Catholic and a parishioner of St. Hilary Catholic Church. He was an active charter member of the Knights of Columbus and held the positions of Warden, Fair Co-Chairman, and Leader of Squires.
Coach Lloyd was an avid fisherman and hunter but loved coaching most of all. He took pride in speaking of, giving advice, and watching his grandchildren play sports. He loved returning to one of his former schools, St. Francis de Sales which is Vandebilt Catholic today, to watch his grandkids play football, and while in the stands, visiting with former players that he had coached there, talking about the old days and football plays. Although his vision was failing, all it took was a “Hey Coach! Remember me?” and he would remember the voice of a former player and they would begin a conversation about old times.
The family would like to give special thanks to Julie Prince, Johnna Le, and George Theriot, friends and caregivers to Lloyd; Dr. Dickie Haydel, Dr. Sisam, Dr. Savard, Dr. Abben, Dr. Mike Robichaux, Dr. Aurora and his nurse Teesa, Dr. Pradeep Nair, Dr. Sonnier, Dr. Lamar Waguespack, Thibodaux Regional Home Health, Ochsner Home Health and PT.
Visitation will be held at St. Hilary of Poitiers Catholic Church on Monday, February 7th from 9 am until service time. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 am with burial to follow in St. Mary Cemetery.
