James Merlin Avet, 86, a native and resident of Houma, passed away Saturday, Nov. 8,2014, at his home.
Visitation will be from 8 a.m. until funeral time Thursday at St. Bernadette Catholic Church. A Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at the church, with burial in St. Francis de Sales Cemetery II.
He is survived by his daughters, Linda Avet, of Metairie, Jean "Kathy" Dominique (Stephen), of Houma, and Mary Boudreaux (David), of Houma; sister, Mercedes Avet Turner, of Houma; grandchildren, Jessica Salinas (Shayne), of Spring, Texas, Steven Boudreaux, of Baton Rouge, Christopher Boudreaux (Mary), of Baton Rouge, and Alicia Boudreaux, of Houma; great-grandchildren, Lauren Friery, of Pasadena, Texas, Jordan Chilton, of Alvin, Texas, Tyler Friery, Quentin Friery, and Donovan Salinas, of Spring, Texas; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Isabel Garcia Avet, parents, Onezippe Jean Avet and Heloise Marie Walker; brothers, Royce, and O.J.; sister, Rosalie Avet Mayo; and grandson, James Everett Chilton.
James was born Oct. 25, 1928, in Houma. He graduated from Terrebonne High School and attended Louisiana State University. He was U.S. Army veteran serving in Japan after World War II and played trumpet in the U.S. Army Band. James married in 1950 in San Diego, Texas, and relocated with his family to Raleigh, North Carolina, and Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, before finally returning to Houma in 1961. He retired as an electronics technician after a career with the Federal Aviation Administration. Earlier in his life he was a professional trumpet player with the Beto Villa band, playing big band and tejano music. His interests included genealogy research, gardening, and watching old movies on TCM. James was a quiet man and devoted husband to his wife, Belle. He was a loving father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, and will be greatly missed.
The family would like to thank Haydel Memorial Hospice as well his wonderful sitters for the love and care given during this time.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to any educational establishment.
