Irene Marie Alexina Landry Brady, 100, was born Jan. 2, 1911, in Thibodaux and passed away, Thursday, March 31, 2011 at the home of her daughter in Gulf Breeze, Fla.

A funeral Mass will be held at 1 p.m. today at Our Lady of the Rosary Catholic Church in Larose. The church will be opened at 11 a.m. for a Rosary and viewing.

She is survived by two children, Tanya Brady Ditto and husband, William, and James Patrick Brady and wife, Kate Cheramie; 11 grandchildren; and 27 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Sylvester and Eliza Perez Landry; her stepmother, Betty Hollis Landry; her husband, John Ansel Brady Sr.; her son, John Ansel Brady Jr.; and her son-in-law, William H. Ditto.

She was the widow of John Ansel Brady Sr., with whom she had celebrated 50 years of marriage. She attended Mount Carmel Convent, Thibodaux High School and graduated from Louisiana State University earning a bachelor of science in home economics in 1933. In 1945, John and Irene purchased the Leeville Telephone Company, renaming it Lafourche Telephone Company, and eventually SJI, an acronym for Sylvester, John and Irene.

She was a founding member of the Golden Meadow Woman’s Club and Les Artistes de Bayou. Irene loved to paint, sew, cook, entertain, play contract bridge and Scrabble, work crossword puzzles with a pen, speak fluent French and was an avid fisherman. Irene and John loved to travel and visited every U.S. state, most continents, and close to a hundred countries.
