Ed lived a life of joy, service and love, inspiring all who knew him. He was a respected educator at Lockport High School, Holy Savior Central High School, and Vandebilt Catholic High School. Ed served as eucharistic minister, lector and held several key positions on the Holy Savior Parish Council for many years. He was also employed by Terrebonne Bank & Trust and its successors in Houma, LA.
He was born in Brownsville, TX on December 20, 1928, and grew up there. He entered the US Army at 17 in 1946 and served in occupied Japan until 1948. His final MOS was “tabulating machine operator,” entering punch cards on early IBM computers used by the US military. Ed was an early and enthusiastic adopter of computational technologies.
He returned to the Rio Grande Valley and attended Texas Southmost College in Brownsville. Subsequently, he was a student in Chemical Engineering at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge in 1950, when he met his bride-to-be in the Chemistry Library there. He always said she had great legs, a beautiful smile, and made delicious coffee!
They were married on June 20, 1953, and made their home in Oakmont, PA, a suburb of Pittsburgh, where he worked for the Gulf Oil Company. In 1954, Gulf transferred him to the oilfields out of Fourchon, LA. The young couple moved to Lockport, LA, which they would call home until March, 2019.
Seeking a more fulfilling life, and time with his young, growing family, Ed accepted a teaching position at Lockport High School in 1958. In 1959, he moved to Holy Savior High School, to begin a twenty-year career with the Archdiocese of New Orleans’ school system. Sadly, in 1972, Holy Savior (by then Holy Savior Central) High closed, and Ed obtained a position with Vandebilt Catholic High in Houma, LA.
It was in this role of mentor to countless young adults that he flourished, passing along everything from a knowledge of chemistry and physics, to solid advice for young engaged couples in the Pre-Cana program at Holy Savior Catholic Church, where he and Gloria were communicants. Ed was a Eucharistic minister, and lector for the Church. He also was a member and an officer of Terrebonne Genealogical Society.
