Capt. Irwin “Venu” Callais, 94, a native of Cut Off and a resident of Galliano, passed away on Wednesday, August 26, 2020.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 am Saturday at Our Lady of Prompt Succor Catholic Church, Golden Meadow, LA, with burial to follow in the church cemetery.
He is survived by his wife of 75 years, Neva Cheramie Callais; children, Wayne N. Callais (Paula), Kathryn C. Kolysko, Reed A. Callais (Juli), Mark P. Callais (Sandy); daughter-in-law, Rachel Callais; grandchildren, Joshua Callais, Jacob Callais (Shantelle), Jordan Callais, Stephen Cannatella, Jamie Callais (Hannah), Jessica Callais (Tobby), Caleb Callais (Rebecca), Brandon Callais, Philippe Callais, Andrea Galjour (CJ), Alissa Rodrigue (Jordan) and Mark Philip Callais (Celeste); great grandchildren, Macy, Violette, Allyson, Noah, Ava, Owen, Hyden, Katja, Wyatt, Eleanor, Arabella and Atlas; brothers, Roland Callais and Calvin Callais (Shirley) and sister, Betty C. Birdsall (Walter) and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his sons, Irwin Michael Callais and Kenneth A. Callais; parents, Edville and Oceana Guidry Callais; and sister-in-law Blanche Callais.
He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and a past member of Our Lady of Prompt Succor church council. Irwin was a retired employee of Texaco. Capt Irwin was a charter fisherman for 22 years. He loved fishing in Grand Isle and instilled that love of fishing in his children and grandchildren.
